Gold has been around for thousands of years, but do you know a lot about them? In this post, we will give you some interesting facts about gold that you might not know.
1. Gold comes from outer space
Unlike other precious metals, gold comes from space. So we can call gold “an alien” compare to other metals.
Scientists believe all the gold on Earth were formed in supernovae and neutron star collisions, which occurred before the solar system formed (Thoughtco).
So how does gold end up on earth? Around 4 billion years ago, asteroids struck the Earth, causing gold to surface to the mantle and crust. Since gold is heavy, the majority of it sank in the ocean. According to the National Ocean Service, our oceans hold some 20 million tons of gold (Atlas).
2. Gold is edible
Gold is edible in small quantities. In some Asian countries, gold is added to food such as fruit and sweets. Also, you can find gold leaves in many variations of liquors around the world. Furthermore, gold can also be found as an ingredient in some medicines.
3. Olympic gold medals are mostly silver
These are not really facts about gold, but they are interesting facts about Olympic gold medals. According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), gold and silver medals are required to be at least 92.5 per cent silver. A minimum of at least 6 grams of pure gold is required for the plating of the gold medals.
But this was not always the case. If you won a gold medal at the Olympics up until 1912, you would have received a medal made from solid gold. The value of gold in one of those medals in current terms would be $13,000 (Canberra Times).
Therefore with around 1,700 gold medals is given out in the Olympics, It is only sensible to lower the gold content in the medals to cut down on costs.
